Blessed are the peacemaker fungi

Depleted uranium is not really on the agenda but I think it is an issue that deserves greater prominence. DU is used in tank shells and is very effective at destroying enemy tanks but I have been concerned about the effects on both the health of the serivce men exposed to it in battle and the longer term affects on the host population and environment long after the war has ceased. In short there is a risk of these turning into a new land mines like issue.
Now I’ve found a great post on the Not Exactly Rocket Science blog about how fungi can absorb the harmful effects of DU. I think it should be a matter of urgency that this pure science is developed into a usable application. The financing I think would be done best on a pan NATO basis and the sooner it is deployed to former battlefields around the world the better.
