Sleepwalking towards fascism

5 December, 2007

At the last london assembly elections in 2004 the BNP gained 90,365 votes just 5714 votes short of winning a seat on the London assembly. Just another 0.3% of the vote and they would have succeded. In May 2008 we may not be so lucky.

Since 2004  we saw the local government election in Barking and Dagenham in May 2006 where the BNP won the vast majority of seats that it stood in. So the picture of the BNP is unfortunatly not one of electoral collapse after 2004, even if internally they are have some major difficulties. Helpfully documented by the ever useful Searchlight.

What the BNP had to do in 2004

Turnout    Seat 1        Seat 2       Seat 3

37%           96,079      153,726    211,373

57.8%       152,031     243,250   334,469

37% was the actual turnout in the assembly elections and the 57.8% was the general election turnout. If we can produce that next May then the job of the BNP gets very much harder.

The scale of the threat posed by the BNP in the 2008 London assembly elections is greater than our current appreciation of it. In other words we need to be less interested in the Ken and Boris show and more interested in stopping nazi criminals who make Boris’s views on race look like a community cohesion how to guide.

We need a campaign that asks people to show support for a modern vision of London as a global city. This means not just campaigning in the Barking and Dagenham but also mounting a strong campaign from all parties to boost turn out across the capital.

The fact is that most people would rather not have criminal racists running their city and while they may not be at all in love with the mainstream political parties at the moment most people can see that they are an improvement on people who have counted terrorists and gang rapists amongst their number.

We also need UKIP to pull its finger out because if their vote collapses and then sees the BNP as a viable alternative to the mainstream parties then we may not be just taking about the BNP winning one seat. In 2004 in the 14 constituency seats the combined UKIP and BNP vote was over 10% in 10 of them.

Personally I don’t believe that in over 70% of the capital that one in 10 are hardcore Nazi’s. Clearly this is not the case. It is a political problem with no doubt political solutions. I know Jon Cruddas have given a large amount of thought to this, see here, and given his constituency you can see why.

So it is up to all good people to do something about this before next May because by then it may be to late. Winning a seat would give them legitamacy, media opportunites, staff, resources and four years to prepare for the next election. It would also be the best springboard they could possibly devise for the 2009 European elections.

  1. It’s all good for you to say UKIP should `pull its finger out’, if only to stop the BNP. Such a call to arms will not wash with people like me who recall your insulting dismissal of us last year on the `vote 2007′ website:

My impression is that Nigel Farage could have the leadership of UKIP any day he wanted because he is about the only member who looks relatively sane,

    1) your probably right he’s certainly there most high profile person

    2) Looking sane against the rest of UKIP is not an achievement to be lauded as 99.9% of the population can do it already

We will continue to mount our NON-RACIST opposition to the ever-increasing take over of this country by the EU. When the history of this period is written in years to come, I am sure the hysterical and personality-driven diatribes people like you offer as some kind of balanced criticism will be seen in the same light as the appeasers of the 1930s who once ridiculed Churchill.

Well you would have thought that you might want to retain your seats. What actually happend to them? Have they changed their name or have they defected?

Though I fundementally disagree with UKIP over a whole range of things. I think that it is good there can be a place for people who aren’t keen on immigration, taxes and Europe without having to resort to the goose steppers.

“hysterical and personality-driven diatribes people like you” I wear it with pride

“insulting dismissal” isn’t that what you call freedom of speech?

Was there not a recent Searchlight anti-fascist weekend campaign training? Couldn’t make it but would be keen to hear from anyone who did. Is it blogged anywhere?

Yes, was in West Brom. Haven’t seen it as yet. The best bit was …. no I better not online 😉

  5. The London Assembly members from UKIP defected to the now defunct Veritas group led by Kilroy-Silk. They went on to become One London. They ought to have handed over their seats to the next two people on the UKIP list. Instead, they hang on to the trappings of being in County Hall. Many a London UKIP member look upon these two with contempt especially as lots of hard working Londoners in 2004 helped them to get voted.

We don’t have a problem with immigration, taxes or Europe. We have a problem with the immigration system as it is managed now, that we are over-taxed and with the EU (which is not the same as Europe). Maybe these distinctions are lost on people who proudly support hysterical and personality-driven diatribes.

I stand by my observation of referring to your vote2007 post as an insulting dismissal. To say “Looking sane against the rest of UKIP is not an achievement to be lauded as 99.9% of the population can do it already.” is a cheap shot, to say nothing about deriding those with genuine mental illness. But how does my comment take away your right to be stupid?

I know that the your aiming for the guardian reader vote but saying that you don’t have a problem with immigration, taxes or europe is like saying the sky is not blue on a sunny day.

As you say yourself “We have a problem with the immigration system as it is managed now, that we are over-taxed and with the EU” and that is why people vote for you in the electorates infinate wisdom.

Consider this. UKIP is primarily made up of tory rejects and people like Godfrey Bloom who came out with such great pearls of wisdom as “No self-respecting small businessman with a brain in the right place would ever employ a lady of child-bearing age.” and the immortal take on women “I just don’t think they clean behind the fridge enough”, perhaps then you will understand why normal people, you know the sort, the ones who realise that it is actually the 21st century now may view UKIP with a degree of scepticism.

I wonder if your reply will contain the words “hysterical and personality-driven diatribes.” I hope so.

  7. I suppose in your world view would say UKIP has the monopoly on ill-considered comments while the other three main parties are bastions of all that is right and decent with the world. If only this was true then you might have traction with your cherry pickings. But that is not the case and I certainly do not have to dredge up the far worse excesses of those who been responsible for where Britain is today.

My pitch is certainly not towards the Guardian vote. It is what it is. And based upon what we stand for. I do not have to repeat what you said before about what you are proud of. It is there for all to judge.

And let me assure you that your cynical take on our electoral results or whether we are in the 21st century or not (as against debating the REAL issues), does absolutely nothing but confirm to me that people like you are the ones who are actually sleepwalking towards the tyranny you opened this thread with.

No I think that there are very profound differences between the left and right of the political spectrum and don’t buy into the argument that all parties are the same.

“but confirm to me that people like you are the ones who are actually sleepwalking towards the tyranny you opened this thread with.”

Well if you believe that it goes along way down the road to explaining why your in UKIP.
